Henry County rising senior Deonte Ward has taken a significant step in his recruiting journey.
The 6-foot, 185-pound wide receiver and defensive back picked up his first Division I scholarship offer when UT Martin extended an opportunity to the Class of 2027 standout. The offer gives Ward his first opportunity and could be the beginning of a busy recruiting cycle as he heads into his senior season.
Ward has quietly developed into one of West Tennessee’s more intriguing two-way prospects. While his athleticism stands out on both sides of the football, it’s his ability to create explosive plays at wide receiver that has begun attracting college attention.
During his junior campaign, Ward recorded 13 receptions for 236 yards and three touchdowns, averaging more than 18 yards per catch. Rather than piling up short catches, Ward consistently made defenses pay down the field, showing the speed to separate vertically and the ball skills to finish explosive plays. Local coverage throughout the season routinely identified him as one of Henry County’s primary deep threats, capable of changing a game with a single touch.
One of his most impressive performances came in Henry County’s 45-7 Homecoming victory over Kenwood. Ward opened the night with a 32-yard reception that set up an early touchdown before adding scoring grabs of 42 and 13 yards, accounting for two receiving touchdowns in a dominant offensive showing. His ability to stretch the field was on full display as the Patriots rolled to another convincing victory.
Ward’s versatility also adds to his recruiting appeal.
His athletic profile allows coaches to project him on either side of the football. At 6-foot-0 and an 185-pound frame, he possesses the length and range college programs covet in defensive backs while also offering the speed and body control to develop as a perimeter receiver.
UT Martin has built a reputation for evaluating and developing talent throughout West Tennessee, and Ward fits the mold of the type of multi-positional athlete the Skyhawks have targeted in recent recruiting classes. As his senior season approaches, he’ll have another opportunity to expand his résumé with additional production, while continuing to showcase his value as a two-way playmaker.
With his first Division I offer now on the board, Ward’s recruitment appears to be gaining momentum. If he builds on the flashes he showed during his junior campaign, more programs could soon enter the picture.
