Asa Barnes Nears Decision Day With Tennessee’s Backfield Picture Now Clearer
The countdown is on for Asa Barnes. The Westview High School running back is less than a week away from announcing his college decision, with the three-star prospect set to reveal his choice live on the Rivals YouTube channel on July 29 at 5:00 p.m. ET and 4:00 p.m. CT. Barnes has narrowed his list to four programs: Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida State and USC, and the recruiting world will be watching closely after a significant domino fell just days before his announcement.
On Wednesday, five-star running back David Gabriel Georges, known widely as DGG, committed to Tennessee over Ohio State and Ole Miss. The Baylor School standout from Chattanooga is the number two running back nationally and the top overall prospect in the state of Tennessee according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. His commitment gives the Volunteers a massive addition to their 2027 class and immediately raises questions about how it might shape the decisions of other in-state running backs still weighing their options, including Barnes.
It would be understandable if DGG’s pledge nudges Barnes toward one of his other finalists. In today’s landscape, prospects are more aware than ever of usage rates, touch counts and the path to NFL evaluation, and nobody wants to feel like they are sharing a backfield with another highly regarded back at the same school. That instinct makes plenty of sense for a player trying to maximize every opportunity in front of him.
At the same time, history shows that Tennessee has proven multiple talented running backs can thrive together in Knoxville. Going back to the 1998 national championship season, the Volunteers rolled with Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry and Travis Stephens all sharing the same backfield, and all three went on to have real success both in college and beyond. It can be done, and it has been done at Tennessee specifically. Still, every recruit and every era is different, and Barnes and his family will have to decide what fits him best.
Whatever direction Barnes leans, his talent speaks for itself. As a junior at Westview, he carried the ball 146 times for 1,208 yards and 25 touchdowns while adding 27 catches for 567 yards and six more scores through the air, numbers that helped power the Chargers to a 14 and 0 record and a Class 3A state championship. He is regarded as one of the most gifted players to come through Northwest Tennessee in recent memory, a true dual threat who can line up as a runner or a receiver and change a game either way. He also has the physical tools to make an impact defensively, and some who have watched him closely believe his ceiling might actually be higher on that side of the ball.
Barnes has taken official visits to both Tennessee and Arkansas this offseason, and his recruitment has drawn interest from a long list of programs beyond his final four, including Alabama, Ohio State, Kentucky and Ole Miss. His primary recruiter at Tennessee has been running backs coach De’Rail Sims, who is also the coach who landed DGG.
No matter where Barnes ultimately signs, college football fans should expect a running back capable of making an immediate impact. The next seven days will determine which fan base gets to celebrate that outcome, and after DGG’s commitment to Tennessee, Barnes’ decision just became one of the more fascinating storylines left on the recruiting calendar this summer.
