Caleb Downs is a 6’0, 206-pound safety from Ohio State University. Coming out of Mill Creek High School, Downs was a “5-Star Plus” prospect and was the #1 ranked safety and the #7 ranked player in the nation by 247Sports. He committed to Alabama, where he would become the first freshman in Alabama history to lead the team in tackles, and was named SEC Freshman of the Year and earned Freshman All-American honors. He then transferred to Ohio State, where he won a National Championship in 2024, was a two-time unanimous All-American, and in 2025 was the Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year, won the Jim Thorpe award (nation’s top defensive back), and was 9th in Heisman Voting. Downs is viewed as a consensus Top 10 pick and has everything you could ask for, accolade-wise, to back it up.

Athletically, Downs has a compact, muscular build, and has elite burst and speed. He is able to bring down bigger backs and tight ends in space with no issues, and is a physical wrap up tackler. He is able to shed blocks well against receivers, but struggles a bit more against tight ends. Downs has elite hip fluidity and blankets slot receivers and tight ends in coverage. Mentally, Downs is quick to decipher between run and pass, and fills his gap in the run game consistently. He has a great feel for routes and how they are developing behind and around him which allows him to keep his eyes on the QB and make plays on the ball. He is always communicating presnap, getting assignments sorted correctly and oftentimes calling out where the play is heading.
Downs saw a pretty even split between nickel and strong safety and excelled at both. He was good at disguising his blitzes, and ambushed the backfield with his hair on fire, whether he was playing the run or blitzing. This did bring up one area for improvement in his game, which was his pursuit angles for tackles, there were plays where he would take the wrong angles and end up just behind the ball carrier either in the backfield or in space. However, he is a more than capable and willing tackler, both in space and between the tackles. In coverage, Downs is sticky, staying right on the hip of receivers, and playing through the hands at the catch point while wrapping up the player. He was also exceptional at route mirroring in space, and even if a receiver was able to get a step on him, his speed allows him to chase them down and stay in position for a pass breakup. Additionally, Downs was also a dynamic punt returner, scoring touchdowns on special teams at both Alabama and Ohio State, and can contribute in that role at the next level as well.
In conclusion, Downs is a compact, muscular do-it-all defensive back. He is 6’0, 206lbs, and has elite athletic traits and mental ability. Downs plays all over the field, but thrives in the strong safety/big nickel role, serving as a plus run defender with the ability to lock down slot receivers and TEs. He is a capable and willing tackler, and doesn’t struggle to bring down larger bodies in space. He does need to work on his pursuit angles, as he can run into the backfield with his hair on fire and miss tackles, but otherwise doesn’t have a flaw in his game, and already looks like a seasoned vet.
Scheme Fit and Team Fits
Downs fits best in a scheme that utilizes a big nickel as a part of their base defense and would be a plug-and-play in most systems. Teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks, Detroit Lions, and Baltimore Ravens are defenses with elite coordinators that thrive with a big nickel, and would be able to get the most out of Downs’ vast skillset.
NFL Player Comp: Brian Branch
Downs and Branch both originate from Nick Saban’s defense, are very similar in height, weight, and overall athleticism, and Downs will likely play in the same role as Branch does with the Lions.
Projection: Elite Player
Downs is what every modern defense is looking for: an elite big nickel, and he will be a star in the league for years to come, garnering All-Pro accolades along the way.
Grade and Round Projection: 6.57, Top 10 Pick
