Malachi Fields is a 6 ‘4, 223-pound wide receiver from Monticello High School in Charlottesville, Virginia, who played at Virginia from 2021 to 2024 before transferring to Notre Dame in 2025. After showing promise as a freshman, Fields missed most of the 2022 season with a broken foot but rebounded with a breakout junior campaign in 2023, earning Comeback Player of the Year semifinalist honors. He followed that performance with strong production in 2024 at Virginia and again in 2025 at Notre Dame. Fields demonstrated the ability to produce in multiple offensive structures, playing in a spread system at Virginia and a pro-style offense at Notre Dame, performing effectively in both. He earned 2024 Third-Team All-ACC honors and was an Honorable Mention selection in 2023. His resilience and steady development following injury have played a significant role in his rise as an NFL draft prospect.

Fields possesses a prototypical NFL wide receiver build at 6 ‘4, 223 pounds, with a wide, filled out frame and long wingspan that expands his catch radius. His acceleration and burst are adequate, but he carries solid build up speed due to his long strides. Fields plays through contact and looks to impose himself on defenders at the catch point. He is also an explosive leaper, further enhancing his effectiveness in contested situations. The combination of size, length, physicality, and vertical ability makes him a strong red-zone and jump-ball threat. As a former high school quarterback, Fields displays advanced processing and football IQ. He recognizes coverages and executes quickly, showing an advanced understanding of leverage and spacing. He processes the game well while maintaining solid play speed. Fields competes consistently and is willing to put his body on the line. He is a physical, intelligent blocker who identifies when he is not the primary target and positions himself to create opportunities for teammates in both the run and pass game. His blend of physical tools, competitiveness, and football intelligence has contributed significantly to his rise as an NFL prospect.

Fields’ route running and release will need refinement at the next level to maximize his ceiling. Both traits are currently serviceable, but his breaks lack suddenness, limiting consistent separation against man coverage. Despite that, he compensates with strong football IQ, leveraging positioning and route awareness to create throwing windows. He demonstrates a good understanding of leverage and consistently finds and settles into soft spots in zone coverage. His release lacks initial explosiveness, which can hinder separation off the line. Fields shows a tendency to release inside, and it will be important to see whether his strength and processing allow him to continue winning that way against NFL defenders. Versus press coverage, he utilizes his size and physicality effectively, often winning early with strong hands and body control. Fields possesses very good hands, supported by a low drop rate (2.7%). His large catch radius and ability to win in contested situations project well to the next level. While he is not a natural open-field creator, he has shown the ability to read blocks and break weaker tackle attempts. He may need to be schemed into space, such as through screen concepts or play-action crossers to maximize his abilities. Overall, Fields projects as a starting-level outside receiver in the NFL. Continued development in his release and route sharpness will determine whether he reaches a higher ceiling, but his combination of size, hands, competitiveness, and football intelligence provides a strong foundation for long-term success.

Scheme Fit and Team Fit:

Fields would thrive in a Shanahan/McVay style offense with heavy play action. Good team fits would be San Francisco, Washington, and Raiders due to both team needs and playing style.

NFL Player Comp: Allen Lazard

Fields’ style of play is very similar to Allen Lazard. Both are built similarly: tall, with big frames and long arms. The physical aspects of their games are very similar. I see Fields being used similarly as an outside receiver who becomes a team’s primary red zone threat. Like Lazard, Fields will win in the red zone and play in the NFL for a long time.

Projection: League Average Starter

Fields projects as a starting outside receiver in the NFL, being most utilized in the red-zone. His strengths will allow him to carve out a role, but improving his route running and release will be important in determining if he can reach his full potential.

Grade and Round Projection: 4.8 Grade | Round 2 Projection

Fields earned a 4.8 grade, which I believe is a good grade for him. He projects as an Early Day 2 pick, where he will be expected to perform from day 1. I see him starting outside for a team Day 1 and I believe that fields will live up to expectations.
