Eagles vs Vikings, Week 7
Will Weir
The Eagles can bounce back after the first two losses of the season. The Eagles were able to go to Minnesota and beat the Vikings.
Jalen Hurts was great in this game as he had a 158.3 passer rating, which is the perfect passer rating. Hurts went 19/23 with 326 yards and 3 touchdowns. Hurts had the answers for everything the Vikings tried to do on defense. This was going to be a challenging game for the offense, as the Vikings have been good on defense all season, only allowing three deep pass completions. After Hurts’s worst performance of the season, he followed it with the best performance so far.
The wideouts in this game were amazing and looked unguardable at times in this game. DeVonta Smith had nine catches for 183 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was a 79 yard touchdown. Smith ran a great route off of playaction and Hurts was able to find Smith for the long touchdown. Smith had a lot of good catches that moved the sticks which was needed to keep the offense moving and let the defense get some rest on the sideline. A.J. Brown had 4 catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns. The first touchdown was on a 4th down and Brown was able to separate on the scramble drill and score a touchdown. His second touchdown was when Brown had one on one coverage and he was able to get on the inside of the defensive back and score a 26 yard touchdown. Brown also had the game clinching catch. It was 3rd down with 9 yards to pick up the first down. There was 1:45 left in the game and the Eagles needed to pick up this first down to clinch the game. Brown ran a sluggo and was able to beat the defensive back and pick up 45 yards and end the game. Smith and Brown had a combined 13 catches, 302 yards, and 3 touchdowns.
The Eagles’ run game has still not been up to par, as Saquon Barkley only had 44 yards and 2.4 yards per carry. With the Eagles running a bit more play action this game, it might open the run game more in the future. Tank Bigsby got his first carry as an Eagle after getting traded from the Jaguars. It was 11 yards, the most extended play that the Eagles had in a run play this game.
The defense was also good. They did a great job of bending but not breaking, forcing the Vikings to five field goals. They were able to move two turnovers with Jalyx Hunt dropping into coverage and getting the interception. A big part of forcing Carson Wentz to throw into coverage was Jalen Carter laying a big hit on Wentz. Carter had a good game and looked recharged after missing the last game because of injury and extra rest days. Andrew Mukuba was also able to get an interception. The pass rush was able to close in the pocket better this game and cause issues for the opposing offense. The Eagles were able to do a decent job of slowing down Justin Jefferson, limiting him to 5 catches for 79 yards. The person who hurt the Eagles was Jordan Addison, who had nine catches for 128 yards. The Eagles did a good job against the run, only allowing 3.9 yards per carry.
This was a good win for the Eagles. There is still room for improvement; hopefully, we will continue to see that as there was improvement in this game. The Eagles’ next game is a home game vs the Giants. This game is important as games after that, the Eagles enter a challenging part of their schedule. The Eagles have the Packers away, home vs the Lions, and then away against the Cowboys.
