Eagles vs Giants Week 6

The Eagles lost to the Giants on Thursday night, their worst loss in the past few years.

The Eagles’ game started well, but once again, the offense was unable to do anything in the second half. Either the Eagles have a really good game plan coming into the game and are not able to adjust to the adjustments that the defense is making, or the Eagles’ play calling is becoming predictable, allowing the defense to gain the advantage.

Jalen Hurts was okay in this game, but he made two grave mistakes that really hurt the Eagles. The first one was when he overthrew DeVonta Smith on a vertical route, caused by the Giants blowing coverage, leaving Smith wide open, but Hurts missed him. Hurts does not miss this often, but this time he did. The other one was when the Eagles were in the red zone down by 10 points at the start of the 4th quarter. The Giants ran a cover 0 blitz. Hurts had Jahon Dotson out on an out-breaking route, but the throw was on the inside, and it was the first interception of the season for Hurts. Hurts had 283 yards passing in this game.

The running game was better at times in this game. Saquon Barkley had 68 yards and 4.8 yards per carry. I think Hurts should get more involved with the run game, and it would help all aspects of the offense. It would stop the edge defender from crashing as hard on the running back. It could also open up the RPO game to establish a rhythm in the offense when it appears to be sputtering.

The pass catchers in this game were good. Dallas Goedert led the way with 9 catches, 110 yards, and a touchdown. Goedert continues his amazing season. This season, he has been one of the best players. A.J. Brown had 6 catches and 80 yards, while Smith had four catches and 49 yards. If Hurts hit the long ball to Smith, his stats would look different.

The defense in this game did not look like the Eagles’ or Vic Fangio-led defense. It looked like they were getting beaten up. They were less physical than the Giants, and it showed.

Quinyon Mitchell left this game early with an injury, and it looked like the Eagles’ cornerbacks were struggling.

But the corners could have been struggling because of the Eagles’ lack of pass rush. You can not ask anyone in the NFL to guard that long. Jaxson Dart was able to avoid the D-line many times and run or pass to someone open.

The Eagles also need to consider changing something about the kick returns. It seems that they drop the ball more often than not, causing them to start with bad field position.

The Eagles need to move on from this game, do some self-scouting, and find out where the mistakes are coming from. They are able to do this because of the mini bye week, as they do not play again until 10 days after this game. Hopefully, they can figure some things out and bounce back against a good team coming off a bye week as they play the Minnesota Vikings.
