Cumberland University Launches Industry-Leading Applied Sport Management Graduate Program

LEBANON, Tenn. — Cumberland University announced the launch of its newly redesigned Master of Arts in Sport Management with an Applied Emphasis, an innovative graduate program designed to transform how students are prepared for careers in the sport industry.

Unlike traditional graduate programs that rely primarily on classroom instruction and a single internship, Cumberland University’s Applied Sport Management program integrates multiple real-world experiences, national competitions, and industry engagement opportunities throughout the program. This approach ensures that students graduate with both academic knowledge and practical experience that directly aligns with industry expectations.

As the sport industry continues to evolve into a highly competitive, data-driven, and revenue-focused marketplace, the expectations placed on entry-level professionals have shifted dramatically. Employers are no longer seeking candidates with only academic knowledge. Instead, organizations expect graduates to possess real-world experience, professional networks, and the ability to contribute immediately. In response to this industry shift, Cumberland University has developed a program that prioritizes applied learning, workforce readiness, and industry engagement at every stage of the student experience.

The Applied Sport Management program is intentionally designed to bridge the long-standing gap between classroom theory and professional practice. Through a curriculum centered on experiential learning, students actively engage in key areas of the sport business, including revenue generation, ticket sales, sponsorship development, fundraising strategy, and event operations. These are not peripheral topics but core competencies that drive organizational success across professional sports, intercollegiate athletics, and sport-related enterprises.

“Today’s sport industry demands more than knowledge. It demands experience,” said Dr. Greer, graduate sport management program director and faculty member at Cumberland University. “This program was built with a clear purpose in mind. We are preparing students to step into the industry with confidence, competence, and a professional portfolio that reflects real work, not just academic preparation.”

A defining characteristic of the program is its commitment to immersive, high-impact experiential learning. Rather than relying on a single internship at the conclusion of the program, Cumberland integrates applied experiences throughout the academic journey. Students have the opportunity to participate in major sporting events such as the Super Bowl, NFL Draft, NCAA Final Four, and more. These experiences provide direct exposure to event operations, fan engagement strategies, sponsorship activation, and organizational logistics at the highest level of sport.

“These experiences fundamentally change how students view their careers,” Greer added. “When you are working inside these events, not just observing them, you begin to understand the pace, expectations, and complexity of the sport industry. That level of exposure is what separates our graduates from others in the job market.”

In addition to experiential learning at major sporting events, students in the program have the opportunity to compete in nationally recognized competitions such as the National Collegiate Sport Sales Championship and the National Collegiate Digital Marketing Championship. These experiences allow students to apply sales, marketing, and analytics strategies in competitive, real-world environments while benchmarking their performance against top programs nationwide.

The program’s structure is equally innovative, utilizing a multi-modal delivery format that combines in-person, hybrid, and online instruction. This approach provides flexibility without sacrificing quality, allowing working professionals, recent graduates, and non-traditional students to engage in a rigorous academic program while still participating in meaningful experiential opportunities. By removing traditional barriers to access, the program expands opportunities for a broader and more diverse student population.

The program can be completed in as little as one year and requires only 30 total credit hours, aligning with national standards for graduate sport management programs while maintaining the academic rigor expected of a high-quality master’s degree.

Beyond flexibility, the program is deeply aligned with current industry trends and employer expectations. The integration of coursework focused on revenue generation, fundraising, and experiential learning reflects a strategic shift toward preparing students for the business side of sport. In an era where financial sustainability, fan engagement, and data-driven decision-making are critical, graduates must be equipped with both analytical and practical skills. This program ensures that students are not only familiar with these concepts but have applied them in real-world settings prior to graduation.

Students graduate with a professional portfolio that includes sales projects, fundraising campaigns, event operations experience, and digital content production, providing a measurable competitive advantage in the hiring process.

This program also addresses one of the most significant challenges in the sport industry: access. Many aspiring professionals struggle to gain meaningful experience before entering the workforce. By embedding applied learning, industry exposure, and professional networking into the curriculum, Cumberland University removes this barrier and accelerates career readiness.

The impact of this program extends beyond individual student outcomes. By embedding students in real-world environments, Cumberland University is contributing to the broader sport ecosystem by developing professionals who are prepared to add value immediately. Organizations benefit from graduates who understand industry expectations, possess relevant experience, and demonstrate professionalism from day one. At the same time, students benefit from expanded networks, increased confidence, and a clearer understanding of their career pathways.

“We are not just preparing students for jobs in sport,” Greer said. “We are creating a model that changes how sport management education is delivered by prioritizing experience, access, and measurable outcomes.”
