Breaking Down Cam Ward’s Season Debut

Cam Ward’s long-awaited NFL debut ended in a frustrating 20-12 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday. The Tennessee offense could only generate 133 total yards in Week 1.

The Titans’ defense, which ranked second in yards per game last year, allowed Denver to total 317 yards despite recording two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. The offense couldn’t capitalize, settling for four Joey Slye field goals.

Ward, the number one overall pick, completed 12 of 28 passes for 112 yards. He spread the ball to six different receivers but struggled to find a rhythm behind an inconsistent offensive line and wide receivers plagued by drops.

Still, the rookie showed flashes of why he was the top pick

Positive: Getting the ball out quickly

Ward rarely held onto the ball too long, getting it out on time to keep Denver’s dangerous pass rush at bay. It was this that kept Tennessee in the game, and to avoid many negative plays

Positive: Accuracy

Despite what the box score says, Ward displayed the timing and zip on his throws, which the Titans loved. Many of his incompletions came on drops, with several well-placed balls going through the hands of his receivers.

Negative: Costly sacks

Situational football is one area Ward will need to improve. After the Titans recovered a muffed punt in Broncos territory, Ward took back-to-back sacks that pushed Tennessee out of field goal range. He allowed Denver to gain momentum rather than throwing the ball away or scrambling for positive yardage.

Grade: C

In his first regular-season start, Ward gets a C grade. Mistakes and a poor supporting cast shadowed the flow of promise. His debut could have looked very different with better protection and fewer drops.

For now, Tennessee will take the growing pains, knowing that the foundation of their future quarterback is firmly in place.
