Former Westview Star Ty Simpson Shines as Alabama Upsets Georgia

When the lights shined brightest in Athens, Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson delivered the kind of performance that cements reputations. The junior signal-caller passed for 276 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing score to guide the Crimson Tide past Georgia 24–21 in a primetime thriller.

His effort earned him “Player of the Week” honors from the SEC and the Senior Bowl, but it was hardly a surprise for those who know Simpson’s story.

A West Tennessee Original

Simpson’s rise traces back to Martin, Tennessee, where he began carving out his football legacy at Westview High School. As a junior, he passed for 1,888 yards and 20 touchdowns, adding 311 rushing yards and seven more scores. The following year, however, he put his name alongside the state’s all-time greats.

In 2021, Simpson led Westview to the 2A Tennessee State Championship, throwing for 2,827 yards and 41 touchdowns against just three interceptions. He also rushed for 862 yards and 11 touchdowns, earning Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year honors. Recruiters across the country took notice, and Simpson became a five-star prospect with offers from Clemson, Ole Miss, and Tennessee before ultimately committing to Alabama.

Proving Ground in Tuscaloosa

At Alabama, patience was part of the process.

Simpson waited behind veteran quarterbacks while refining his craft under the tutelage of one of college football’s most demanding programs. His perseverance is paying off. Against Georgia, in one of the toughest environments in college football, Simpson showcased not only his arm talent but also his poise, leading the Tide on crucial scoring drives that silenced a raucous Sanford Stadium crowd.

His 63.2% completion rate against Georgia underscored his growing efficiency, while his mobility added another layer to Alabama’s offense. For scouts, it was the kind of balanced, composed performance that boosts draft boards. For Alabama fans, it was validation that Simpson has the tools to carry the Crimson Tide forward.

Eyes on the Future

The recognition from the Senior Bowl carries weight. It signals that Simpson is firmly on the radar of NFL evaluators. With his blend of pedigree, production, and leadership, he is quickly becoming one of the SEC’s must-watch quarterbacks.

For Martin (…and really all of West Tennessee), Simpson’s rise is a source of pride. From Friday nights under the lights at Westview to Saturday night heroics in Athens, he embodies the small-town grit and big-time talent that make college football special.

And if last weekend was any indication, Ty Simpson’s stock is only going up from here.
