Can Garrett Nussmeier’s Knee Hold Up for LSU’s Playoff Push?

LSU enters the 2025 season ranked No. 8 in the preseason poll with high expectations and an offense built around quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. But just weeks before the season opener, the Tigers’ star signal-caller is dealing with patellar tendinitis.

Head coach Brian Kelly has downplayed the concern, rating the injury at just 1.5 out of 10 in severity and assuring fans that Nussmeier will not miss significant time. Still, history has shown that even minor injuries can linger, especially when not given adequate time to heal. LSU will need to be careful.

Nussmeier was one of the top quarterbacks in the nation last season, finishing fifth in overall rankings. He posted a 64.2% completion rate, throwing for 4,052 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. With that kind of production, it’s easy to see why he is projected as a potential first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. His health will be crucial not only for LSU’s success this season, but for his professional future.

The Tigers’ offense is heavily reliant on his arm, but if defenses sense he is not at full strength, they will bring relentless pressure. A strong run game will be key to easing that load and keeping opponents honest. LSU’s talent pool is deep, but they may need other playmakers to step up early to avoid putting too much strain on their quarterback.

The season opener offers no warmup, as LSU will face a highly respected Clemson team right out of the gate. The Tigers will need Nussmeier to be sharp to secure an early statement win.

The stakes are high. If Nussmeier stays healthy, LSU has the weapons to make a legitimate playoff run. If his knee becomes a bigger issue, those dreams could fade quickly. The margin for error in a playoff chase is small, and for LSU, it all starts with keeping their star quarterback upright and ready.
