Some athletes stand out because of their statistics. Others earn recognition through leadership, consistency, and an unwavering commitment to their teammates. Huntingdon High School’s Bryson Whiteside has built his reputation through all three. Whiteside has become one of West Tennessee’s premier football players. A soon-to-be four-year starter in football and a three-year starter in basketball, he has developed into one of the state’s most complete student-athletes.

Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 218 pounds, Whiteside will wear No. 15 this season after previously wearing No. 61 while transitioning from offensive guard to fullback and running back. That position change speaks volumes about his team-first mentality. Rather than focusing on individual accolades, he embraced a new role that allowed him to help his team win in even more ways.
His production during his junior football season was exceptional.
As the lead blocker in Huntingdon’s offense, Whiteside posted an impressive 93% blocking grade while helping pave the way for more than 4,200 all-purpose yards and 62 rushing touchdowns. His willingness to do the work that rarely appears in a box score made him one of the most valuable players on the field every Friday night.
Defensively, Whiteside appeared in seven games, primarily during critical situations and must-win contests. Despite limited defensive snaps, he recorded seven solo tackles and 12 assisted tackles, showcasing his versatility and physicality on both sides of the football.
His outstanding junior campaign earned statewide recognition, including First Team All-Region honors, First Team All-State recognition, and selection to The Jackson Sun All-West Tennessee First Team. Earlier in his career, he was named Second Team All-Region as a sophomore and was recognized as the Offensive MVP of the West Tennessee All-Star Game following his eighth-grade season.
Whiteside’s athletic success extends beyond the football field. On the basketball court, the Huntingdon forward wears No. 31 and has been a three-year starter. He earned All-District honors as a sophomore and was selected to the All-District Tournament Team during his junior season, continuing to demonstrate his ability to compete at a high level across multiple sports.
Currently ranked ninth in Tennessee’s Class of 2027 with a 3.7 GPA, Whiteside understands that success is built through dedication in both the classroom and competition.
Perhaps the most inspiring part of his story, however, is something many people never notice.
Whiteside has also managed Type 1 diabetes since being diagnosed at seven years old. Yet anyone watching him compete would likely never know. He refuses to use his diagnosis as an excuse and instead hopes to inspire and advocate for others living with Type 1 diabetes, proving that challenges do not have to define a person’s potential.
His journey serves as a powerful reminder that determination, preparation, and perseverance can overcome obstacles that might discourage others. As he prepares for his senior season, Whiteside continues to establish himself as one of Tennessee’s top Class of 2027 prospects. His combination of physicality, versatility, leadership, academic success, and resilience makes him an athlete worthy of attention from college programs looking for competitors who impact every aspect of a team.
At NILvana Sports, we celebrate student-athletes who excel beyond the scoreboard. Bryson Whiteside embodies what it means to lead through action, embrace adversity, and compete with purpose.
