NEW YEAR. NEW TEAM. SAME GOAL.

By Caleb Robbins

Over the past few months, the city of Bloomington has been home to a constant state of happiness, exhilaration, and excitement.

The concept that the Indiana Hoosiers are reigning National Champions is still surreal. After all, this reality was widely regarded to be impossible by the Hoosier Faithful. That is, until Head Coach Curt Cignetti took the reins, molding the nation’s losingest program into a college football powerhouse in just two years.

The National Championship team will always be remembered and ingrained in Hoosier lore; however, since January 20th, the focus has been solely on TEAM THREE of the Cignetti era.

“It’s (the National Championship Trophy) sitting about five feet in front of me,” Cignetti said on The Triple Option show back in February. “I’ll make sure they can get ‘em outta here as quick as possible, I don’t want to look at ‘em too long and get soft.”

This relentless approach is contagious within the halls of Memorial Stadium, and the expectations for this upcoming season are no different.

After beginning spring practice a few weeks ago, Hoosier fans will get their first glimpse of the new squad tonight at the Spring Game.

While there is intrigue towards all who suit up during the scrimmage, two high-profile transfers have caught my attention, one on each side of the ball.

PLAYER TO WATCH: NICK MARSH

A Detroit native, Marsh has established himself as one of the premier receivers in the nation after two successful years at Michigan State. This past season, he led the Spartans in receptions (59), receiving yards (662), and receiving touchdowns (6).

At 6’3 and 203 pounds, the junior has been effective at the catch point, demonstrating physicality and elite body control. Frequently lining up on the outside, Marsh’s ability to win at the line of scrimmage creates a mismatch nightmare for opposing defensive coordinators.

Aside from quarterback Josh Hoover, Marsh may have been the biggest splash in Indiana’s number-one-ranked transfer portal class. With Elijah Sarratt, Omar Cooper Jr., and E.J Williams eagerly waiting to hear their name called this weekend at the NFL Draft, the receiver room gets much-needed firepower with the addition of Marsh.

Marsh is uber-talented, showcasing a unique combination of size and speed that could take Offensive Coordinator Mike Shanahan’s offense to another level.

Heading into the spring game, the connection between Hoover and Marsh is definitely something to look out for, a connection tasked with replacing Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza and his elite pass-catchers. A tall ask to say the least.

PLAYER TO WATCH: PRESTON ZACHMAN

With the departures of Louis Moore and Devan Boykin, the acquisition of Safety Preston Zachman was a homerun in bolstering the secondary, along with adding another veteran voice to the defense. Having spent six years at Wisconsin, Zachman started two full seasons in 2023 and 2024, before being sidelined for the majority of last season with a left leg injury.

Zachman is praised for his high football IQ and versatility at strong safety. His versatility is evident, whether it is playing in coverage or stepping up as box-safety near the line of scrimmage.

His resume speaks for itself. According to PFF, he led all safeties in the Big Ten with six pass breakups during the 2024 season to go along with an 87.2 coverage grade.

The redshirt-senior has the tape and the experience to make an immediate impact. In all likelihood, Zachman will start alongside fellow senior Amare Ferrell to solidify the two safety positions.

Where is he lining up? How explosive will he look? Questions such as these will be answered later tonight, as for Zachman, the game is more about acclimation to the system than on-field performance.

BIGGER PICTURE

Indiana has a target on their back. They are no longer a surprise; they are here to stay. Can the Hoosiers get back to the big game? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain: This Hoosier squad begins its journey tonight.
