USFL Player Evaluation of Pittsburgh LB Kyle Louis by Luke Staton

Kyle Louis is a 6’00, 200 pound linebacker from the University of Pittsburgh. The East Orange, New Jersey product committed to the Panthers in 2021 over a collection of offers that included Maryland, Kent State, Elon, and others. After redshirting his first year and starting only 2 games in 2023, Louis took the reins as starter in 2024 and never let go. In 2024, Louis would record 100 tackles, 7 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 3 pass break ups, 4 interceptions and 1 touchdown. In 2025, Louis would record 79 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 2 fumble recoveries, 2 interceptions and 3 PBUs. Going into the draft, Louis has racked up 198 tackles, 6 PBUs, 10 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 6 interceptions and a touchdown. For his efforts, Louis has been one of the most lauded linebackers in the ACC since he was named the starter. His long list of accolades includes being named to the Sporting News All-America Team (first team), the Associated Press All-America Team (second team), the CBS Sports All-America Team (second team), the Phil Steele All-America Team (second team), The Athletic All-America Team (second team), College Football Network All-America Team (third team), the College Football Network ACC Linebacker of the Year, All-ACC (first team), and the Associated Press All-ACC (first team). Heading into the draft, Louis has a lot of hype around him, and he’s earned all of it.

Physically, Louis is in a bit of limbo as far as linebackers go. He is a little on the shorter side, standing at 6 feet tall exactly, which is not a death sentence for someone of his position, but it makes his job in run defense more difficult. It’s not like it is impossible for shorter linebackers to speed, but they usually have more weight and a compact build, while Louis only weighs 220 pounds and does not appear to be able to support much more weight on his frame. His size lends him to more of a WILL linebacker of hybrid safety role in the NFL. He has good speed and burst, especially in pass coverage, and can keep up with tight ends and running backs well. He also has good play strength as well, especially considering his size.

Louis has a solid mental ability. His IQ shines in pass coverage, especially in zone coverage as he reads the quarterback’s eyes to make plays on the ball. His mental ability in run defense is average, as he often hesitates to take gaps and lets the run come to him when he needs to play gaps more decisively. He has good play speed and toughness, as he has only missed 1 game in his college career. He has solid ball skills, as shown with his interceptions, forced fumbles, and fumble recoveries, which compliment his coverage skills. Louis is good in coverage; he shines in zone with his IQ but also holds up well in man as well with his speed.

Louis is one of the most intriguing prospects in the draft due to him not fitting the prototypical linebacker mold. His speed and IQ are great for the position, but his size limits him, especially in the run game. I think he would be best in a position like WILL linebacker or safety, where he can use his coverage instincts to their fullest extent without as many responsibilities in the run game.

Scheme Fit and Team Fit: Tampa 2/Nickel

I think that Louis would excel in either a Tampa 2 or Nickel scheme due to his speed and explosiveness, where he would excel as a hybrid safety that could rotate across the field. I think that the Bears, Cardinals, and Packers would be the best fit for Louis. These teams are all very reliant on zone defense out of the nickel and have statistically run the most Tampa 2 blitzes this season, which would give Louis the best area of opportunity to showcase his skill set.

NFL Player Comp: Adam Archuleta

My player comparison for Louis is Adam Archuleta. Both are smaller linebackers that translate to the NFL as safeties due to their smaller builds and explosiveness, which allow them to play close to the line of scrimmage while covering intermediate routes with their speed.

Projection: High End Starter

I project Louis as a High End Starter. In the right system, Louis will be a dynamic playmaker that can shoot across the field and make life difficult for opposing QB’s

Grade and Round Projection:4.47, Second Round Pick
