George Gumbs Jr. is a unique edge prospect from Simeon High School in Chicago, Illinois. Gumbs entered college as a three-star recruit, primarily playing wide receiver at just 180 pounds. He was recruited by Northern Illinois as a tight end, where he redshirted in 2021 and saw limited offensive and special teams action in 2022. In 2023, Gumbs began to flash intriguing potential, not on offense, but on the defensive side of the ball. His athletic ability as an edge rusher quickly stood out, drawing attention from higher-level programs. He capitalized on that development by transferring to Florida in 2024, where he transitioned fully to defense. Gumbs played a rotational role during the 2024 season, recording five sacks. He followed that up with a breakout campaign in 2025 as a full-time starter, earning an 85.5 PFF defensive grade, including an elite 92.6 run defense grade. His season was cut short after 10 games due to a meniscus injury, but he recovered in time to participate in the pre-draft process and showcase his athletic ability. While still relatively new to the position, Gumbs’ rapid development and unique background make him an intriguing NFL prospect with clear upside.
George Gumbs Jr. possesses good size for a 3-4 edge at 6’’4, 250 pounds, with long arms and a lean frame that can still support additional weight. He shows good speed paired with a very good burst, highlighted by an impressive first step and get-off for a player still developing at the position. His play strength is currently average, but added mass should help him hold up better at the point of attack. Gumbs’ processing is inconsistent—when he diagnoses plays quickly, he flies around the field and makes an impact, but when he is slow to process, he can appear hesitant. This is expected given his limited experience on defense and should improve with more reps. Gumbs plays with a high motor and an underdog mentality. Florida also showed comfort dropping him into coverage, where he held his own, further highlighting his athleticism and versatility.
Gumbs is a developmental prospect who currently wins with speed and effort. His get-off is a clear strength, and he flashes solid bend when turning the corner. However, his pass rush plan remains underdeveloped. His hand placement, counters, and overall block shedding ability need significant improvement. He lacks a consistent power element and does not yet have the play strength to win with a bull rush. Against the run, Gumbs shows a solid anchor but struggles to disengage consistently due to inconsistent technique. His gap discipline and recognition are adequate but will need to improve. When he is able to get his hands on opponents cleanly, he shows the ability to finish plays. Overall, Gumbs flashes intriguing upside but must become more technically refined and consistent to earn a defensive role at the next level.

Gumbs would best fit in a 3-4 defensive scheme as a stand-up outside linebacker, where his athleticism and versatility can be maximized. Teams that would fit best would be the Vikings, Commanders, and Cardinals.

Gumbs’ style of play is similar to Josh Uche. Both possess similar builds and rely heavily on speed, burst, and effort to win as pass rushers. Like Uche, Gumbs projects best as a 3-4 edge/OLB who can be used in a variety of ways. However, Gumbs enters the league as a more raw prospect and will require additional development.
